I love beets. Everyone loves these beets. Even the ones who say, oh, I don't eat beets. To those people, you can say, yeah, but these are like the French fries version of beets. Actually, they're the Tuscan-fried version. Which is even better. And much easier to make.
Don't throw away those bones and vegetable trimmings. Stick 'em in a pot with some water and let them simmer for a few hours. You end up with great soup or a great way to pump up risotto or farro or any other grain dish. Fragrant, deeply flavorful stock.
My double-blooming irises actually had their second bloom this year, just in time for Thanksgiving. Spring blossoms in Fall. That got my attention. Hope it gets yours. Just for a minute. You know. Be here now. Right here. Right now. Nothing else. You and this iris. Good Slower practice on a Sunday.
Cranberry Bean Soup with Smoky Cornbread Croutons. The ultimate leftover. Delicious like it should have been the main act, not the afterthought. And a perfect example of protein complementarity. Say what?
I'm thinking we both just ate our way through the holiday and it's time to Walk it off. Consider this Walk around Plymouth Rock as a timely example of a cool Walk you can take anywhere. History aside, Plymouth's a lovely small town. Here's a 2-hour, 4.5-mile, 500-calorie Walk.
Back before cameras, making a picture of something - a turkey, for example - was slow going. If you wanted to show the detail of a feather, you had to draw every one of its hundreds of filaments. Even if your turkey's tender, you may think it's tough to find the right thing to drink with it. The good news: some unusual and relatively inexpensive wines work really well. I'd go for something bright, fruity, spicy. Something to refresh. Something to add interest to the next mouthful.
Two wonderful and interesting salads you can whip together in a few minutes. While everything else Thanksgiving is roasting, baking and bubbling along. Fennel-Celery Salad for my Short Ribs. Butternut Squash & Bosc Pear Ceviche for everything seasonal.
Roll up one for a flu shot? Or roll 'em both up and get some exercise? Revving up your heart rate during aerobic exercise also revs up your immune response. So exercise is probably your best bet for reducing your sick time throughout the Fall-Winter cold season and the rest of the year.
